Student Dress Code
Appropriate dress and grooming support a safe, respectful, distraction-free learning environment. This policy is designed for equity, safety, and student success, while leaving room for reasonable individual expression.
General standards
Every learner's dress should meet four standards.
Supports safety
Clothing must not present a safety hazard or interfere with participation in instructional activities.
Promotes equity
Standards apply consistently regardless of gender, race, religion, disability, or body type.
Avoids disruption
Clothing or accessories may not substantially disrupt learning or infringe on the rights of others.
Complies with law
Dress aligns with applicable health, safety, and civil rights law, including disability and religious accommodations.
Prohibited dress and grooming
The following are not permitted unless specifically authorized for educational or cultural purposes.
- ✕Clothing or accessories depicting alcohol, tobacco, vaping, or illegal substances
- ✕Sexually explicit, lewd, or vulgar content
- ✕Depictions of violence, weapons, gangs, or criminal activity
- ✕Hate speech, profanity, or discriminatory language or images
- ✕Clothing that exposes undergarments or private body parts
- ✕Footwear that poses a safety hazard, including no shoes
- ✕Head coverings, except for religious, cultural, or medical reasons
- ✕Any dress that materially and substantially disrupts school operations or the rights of others
The Governing Board authorizes The Meliora School to set school-specific guidelines, including uniforms, spirit wear days, and activity-specific dress, through the Student & Family Handbook.
Accommodations
Religious expression
Students may wear attire consistent with their sincerely held religious beliefs.
Disability and medical needs
Reasonable modifications are provided under Section 504 and the ADA.
Free expression
Expression through clothing is permitted so long as it's consistent with the dress code or uniform policy and doesn't cause disruption or infringe on others' rights.
What to buy
Uniform pieces, required colors, and grade-specific guidance are listed in the uniform catalog and available for order through the uniform store. A few things to know before you shop.
Order early
Uniform pieces are made to order in some sizes. Order a few weeks before the first day of school to avoid a wait.

Financial assistance
Families who need help affording uniforms should contact the school office. No learner will be excluded from class for a uniform a family is working to obtain.
Enforcement
Enforcement is consistent, respectful, and equitable.
No lost instructional time
Students won't be disciplined in a way that causes humiliation or takes them out of class, except for repeated or egregious violations.
Aligned to the Code of Conduct
Violations are addressed under the Student Code of Conduct (D9) and progressive discipline practices.
Published and trained on
Dress code expectations are published annually in the Student & Family Handbook, and staff are trained on fair, consistent enforcement.
