More Than 100 Families Enroll at New Gwinnett County Charter School in 10 Days

The Meliora School, a new Gwinnett County charter school, is entering its first year with strong early demand as its founding sixth- and seventh-grade class approaches capacity months before opening.

After receiving 187 applications for 125 available seats by the application deadline, Meliora conducted a public lottery on January 23, 2026. Within 10 days of placement notification, more than 100 families completed enrollment commitment materials, securing over 80% of the seats. A waitlist is now forming as interest continues to grow.

When it opens this fall, The Meliora School will serve sixth- and seventh-grade students as the inaugural class of its broader grades 6–12 model. It will be Gwinnett County’s first public charter school serving grades 6–12 and the first in the county to implement a full mastery-based learning model across both middle and high school.

"Families are seeking greater clarity in how their children progress academically," said Dr. Christine Keck, Founder of The Meliora School. "In a mastery-based model, students advance when they demonstrate readiness—not simply because time has passed. Parents appreciate knowing their children won't move forward with gaps that follow them year after year."

Why Families Are Choosing Mastery Learning

At The Meliora School, students advance based on demonstrated understanding rather than seat time.

Students who need additional support receive targeted instruction until they achieve mastery. Those who are ready move ahead with confidence. This approach strengthens academic foundations and provides families with clear evidence of progress.

Mastery learning is paired with project-based learning in entrepreneurship and computer science, allowing students to apply academic skills in real-world contexts. The goal is deep subject mastery that opens doors to college, career, and long-term success.

“As a parent, I wanted a school where progress is clear and my child is being measured,” said Zenat, whose child, Sukaina, is enrolled in the founding sixth-grade class. “Knowing my child will only move forward when they truly understand the material gives me confidence that they’re building lifelong knowledge, rather than memorizing for a test.”
